Reno, NV gathers for a People-Planet-Peace event!

The Sierra Interfaith Action for Peace group in Reno, NV held an event titled “People-Planet-Peace” on September 27, 2014

They gathered for a collaborative event planned and sponsored by several local groups in the Reno-Sparks-Carson City area. Previous to the event, they had procured Peace Day proclamations from the Cities of Reno, Sparks, and Carson and from the governor’s office of the State of Nevada, which were on display the day of the event. The event was designed to connect the many people and organizations in the area who already work on the big issues of violence, including the violence of poverty, of environmental destruction, and war. It was two hours long, with excellent speakers: Fr. Chuck Durante of the Catholic Diocese, Barry Peterson of UNR’s Peace Studies program, Kyle Chandler-Isacksen of Be the Change Project, and words from an interfaith contingent, as well as three musicians and a Native American chanter. Tables representing the groups held information for involvement. Blue scarves were passed out to all who wore them. We had a large “sculpture” of plastic bottles showing the problem of using plastics. The day before the event, an opinion piece was published in the local newspaper. A Letter to the Editor appeared in two local papers; one link is here. Local Channel 4 KRNV News filmed a portion of the event, but it did not appear on the news program.
