Petaluma, CA Gathers to Resist Violence and Hate

Posted by Erin Bechtol

by Rivera Sun  // Part of the Campaign Nonviolence Week of Actions

A group gathered at the Metta Center for Nonviolence to discuss nonviolent strategies for countering the rise of hate, white supremacy, and neo-Nazis. The discussion was livestreamed via Facebook, reaching 700 people in 24hrs and opening up online discussions on the theme. This event was an impromptu action that emerged when author/activist Rivera Sun decided to turn a book reading for her nonviolent novel, The Roots of Resistance, into a group discussion on these themes. Strategies explored included the tactics of using free speech to stop hate speech, active counter-recruitment, direct engagement with potential hate group members, and historic tactics used by people throughout history. Special thanks to Stephanie Van Hook and Michael Nagler from the Metta Center for hosting. The Facebook Live video of this event can be viewed here:
