by Maggie Winfrey // Part of the Campaign Nonviolence Week of Actions
We held a peace and healing prayer service for all those who suffered as a result of 9-11, including first responders, rescue workers, and construction crews. We honored those who suffered from PTSD as a result of the violence of the terroristic act. We also included all those who have suffered from sexual abuse at the hands of Church authorities. It was a deeply moving experience. We began with John Lennon’s “Imagine.” Our readings were from Isaiah 51: 4-8, 14-16, Colossians 3:12-17, John 20:19-23 with “Like a Shepherd” for the responsorial psalm. Our ending song from St. Patrick’s Breastplate “Let All Around Us Be Peace” resonated so profoundly that it took several minutes before people could move. The participants thanked us profusely and hoped we would be able to do this every year.
