SLO County Human Trafficking Summit – 9/15
This event co-sponsored by Yes We Can Peacebuilders, the Women’s Guild of St. Timothy Church, and Rotary Clubs of Estero Bay, California is a public workshop summit to address the increasing problem of human trafficking on the Central Coast of California and human trafficking in general. Keynote Speaker is Opal Singleton, Author of “Seduced: The Grooming of America’s Teenagers” and President and CEO of MillionKids.org. Community panelists include, Jane Doe, a human trafficking survivor, San Luis Obispo County DA Dan Dow, Founder & Chair of SLO County Human Trafficking Task Force, County Sheriff Ian Parkinson, Morro Bay Police Chief Greg Allen, and Deepa Willingham, Moderator and Past District Governor, Rotary District 5240. This event is in keeping with the United Nations 2018 theme The Right to Peace–The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70. Lunch is included for $15. Celebrating Peace on Earth – 9/16
Yes We Can Peacebuilders and the First Christian Church of Morro Bay will erect an “Earth Pole” in conjunction with their Earth Care Ministry in celebration of International Peace Day and Peace Week on Sunday, September 16, 2018 at 2 PM at the First Christian Church. The Earth Pole was created with images of the planet, the seas, and the air and Earth’s creatures and signifies the intention of this ministry to achieve environmental justice in the world. Songs, recitations, and the reading of the United Nations 30 Basic Human Rights will occur to satisfy the United Nations peace day theme of “The Right to Peace-the Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70.”
The Right to Peace – 9/20
The Right to Peace event is an outdoor rally in San Luis Obispo, California on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 5:30 PM at venue to be decided. Rally involves a variety of speakers who will speak to the United Nations theme topic for International Peace Day “The Right to Peace-The Universal Declaration of Human Rights at 70.” This event is a collaboration between People of Faith for Justice in San Luis Obispo and Yes We Can Peacebuilders of Morro Bay. Speakers so far include a woman immigrant striving to stay in the United States, a representative from the Islamic Mosque in San Luis Obispo, a representative from The Peace Academy, several pastors, and civic leaders. A Christian music group will entertain. Event is open to the public free of charge.
Candlelight Peace Vigil – 9/21
Yes We Can Peacebuilders and the congregation at Estero Bay United Methodist Church of Morro Bay will celebrate peace with a candlelight vigil around the peace pole at the United Methodist Church. Songs, recitations, and reflections on peace and nonviolence will occur in the evening at 7 PM on International Peace Day September 21, 2018. On Thursday September 20 pre-school children will offer their songs, recitations and art work around the peace pole at 10:45 AM and children ages six to 10 will do the same at 3 PM.
