Gather around the Peace Pole for People, Planet, and Peace in Detroit
In celebration of International Day of Peace Week, you are invited to Gather Around the Peace Pole for People, Planet, and Peace at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church (1950 Trumbull, Detroit MI 48216) from 7:00 to 8:30 P.M. to pray, sing, read, and share your vision of a world in which people come before profits, the planet is valued, and active peacemaking is embraced. How do we help create such a world? Bring songs, stories, prayers, readings, prayers, ideas, and all the love and wisdom in your heart.
In addition to International Day of Peace, this week also marks the U.S.visit of Pope Francis where he will speak on the need to care for creation, on economic justice with a preferential option for the poor, and on the social and spiritual conditions that make for the way of peace. Thursday evening will give us the change to reflect on both his recent encyclical and on the messages he will be sharing during his visit..
Significantly, Yom Kippur also occurs this week with its invitation to repentance, an appropriate response to the unspeakable violence of our times. From water shutoffs to the rejection of war refugees, the systemic injustices that militate against peace must be named and confessed. Many in Detroit are fasting this week as part of a Pope Francis Water Justice Fast in a spirit of repentance and hope. Their intentions will also be held up at the Thursday gathering.
This is an opportunity to come together to remind ourselves of the profound truth that we – all of us – and our beautiful but battered planet are interconnected. An opportunity to come together as community at a relaxed and casual gathering at a holy site – St. Peter’s.
Please join us and share this invitation with others. This event is being sponsored by the IHM Office for Justice, Peace, and Sustainability, Michigan Peace Team – Detroit, the Sisters of Mercy, the Rosa Parks Institute, and St. Peter’s Episcopal. A flyer is attached – please share.
